Dear friends all around the world,

We oppose the policy of the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to dump highly contaminated water of various radioactive materials accumulated at the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant into the ocean.

On April 13, 2021, the Japanese government and TEPCO decided to dump approximately 1.3 million tons of radioactive contaminated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site into the ocean. Violating the promise made to fishermen and ignoring the opposition of municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture, the Japanese government and TEPCO plan to start dumping the contaminated water into the ocean by around spring next year.

The dumping of contaminated water into the ocean is an outrageous act. It is to evade the responsibility for the Fukushima nuclear accident and steer the country toward a policy of promoting nuclear power.

The Japanese government and TEPCO have stubbornly refused to take responsibility for those who have been deprived of their homes and for those children who have been suffering from health problems as evident and serious results of the nuclear accident. Furthermore, it is absolutely unacceptable to take active initiative in polluting the oceans, which also deprives fishermen of their livelihood.

As many as 293 child thyroid cancer cases, including suspected ones, have already been reported. Six of the young patients have launched a legal action to clarify the causal relation between the Fukushima disaster and the cancer, challenging the Japanese government’s shameless narrative: “the accident is unlikely to have caused cancer.”

One year after the cabinet decision, we ask everyone around the world to join our international petition campaign, “Stop dumping of radioactive water into the sea!”, a campaign to support these brave young people in their fight and prevent the scandalous act which causes pollution of all oceans on the globe.
