Shut Down and Scrap All Nuclear Power Plants!
On January 1, 2024, a huge earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture. Having felt a big shake, everyone was reminded of the March 11, the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. On the Noto Peninsula, where the Shika Nuclear Power Plant is located, the ground rose as high as 4 meters and external power of that power plant was partly lost. It really was a close call. If the Shika Nuclear Power Plant had been in operation, or if the construction of the Suzu Nuclear Power Plant had been pushed through, there is no doubt that the Second Fukushima tragedy would have happened all over again. The problem is not only of these two plants in Noto. The four reactors at Ohoi and Takahama, located in Wakasa Bay near the epicenter of the earthquake, are still in operation. The crisis is still ongoing.
Even in the disaster caused by the Noto Earthquake, Prime Minister Kishida is planning to restart Onagawa, Tokai Dai-ni, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, and other Nuclear Power Plants. The Noto Quake made clear that there is absolutely no way to evacuate the area, once hit by a quake. It is out of question to restart the nuclear reactors! Now is the time to raise a loud voice, “Stop all nuclear power plants!”
Down with Kishida, his intention is War before Noto Relief
The Noto Earthquake exposed, Kishida’s true colors, willing to abandon even disaster relief and cast aside working-class people in order for the state to survive. Meanwhile, endless amounts of money are being spent on the military. Furthermore, since the end of last year, Japan has been rushing toward a Taiwan Contingency, an aggressive war against China. The government is pushing on the export of lethal weapons, large-scale military drills, and the construction of missile bases. Moreover, the use of nuclear weapons is going to be a reality in this time of war. War and nuclear power are one and the same. The dumping of contaminated water into the ocean is also directly related to the operation of the Rokkasho Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Facility, which would produce super-weapon-grade plutonium. The contaminated water dumping will open the way for Japan’s nuclear armament. We must absolutely stop the war!
Fight together on the 13 anniversary of the March 11!
On March 11, the Great Tohoku Earthquake,13 years ago, we vowed never to repeat the nuclear plant accident again.
Fukushima is still far from being restored. The State of Emergency was declared in the wake of the nuclear accident, and it has not been lifted. There is no prospect of decommissioning the reactors. Almost 30,000 people are still forced to evacuate. In the towns of Okuma, Futaba, Namie, and Tomioka, most of which are within the Difficult-to-Return Zone, the government established the Specified Living Areas for Returnees, to force the evacuees to return home. However, only specific spots—residential sites, roads, cemeteries etc.—have been decontaminated; around these spots still remain vast high-dose zones. There is no foundation of residents’ lives. The government’s Reconstruction Policy is a sham that pretends as if the damage caused by the nuclear accident did not occur.
Regarding to the dumping of contaminated water into the ocean since last summer, the government obstinately insisted that the contaminated water was safe, and also violated its promise to the people of Fukushima that it would not discharge the water without the understanding of the local communities. In the evacuees' lawsuit, judges have repeatedly stated that the government is not responsible. We must not forget March 11! We must speak up! Speak loud!
Fight in solidarity with people around the world!
Huge demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine and against Ukraine war are taking place around the world. Israel has publicly remarked on the Gaza massacre, "The use of nuclear weapons is an option". In Ukraine, depleted uranium munitions are being used with impunity. Can we allow the tragedies of Hiroshima-Nagasaki, Bikini, Chernobyl, and Fukushima? The fundamental power to prevent nuclear war lies in the anger of Fukushima.
Speak out against wars from Japan! Stand in solidarity with the anger of Okinawa, which is confronting militarization for war of aggression against China! Stand in solidarity with anger of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, led by the A-bomb survivors! Raise our voices against war from Fukushima on March 11, “Shut down and scrap all nuclear power plants! No more war!”
